Custard Pie
Imagine a cold, snowy winter day. I am ten years old and school has been canceled, and my sisters and I are beyond thrilled to spend the day at our grandparents’ house where we will sled, watch television, and play board games – games that typically take a decisively intense turn due to my Granny’s wicked competitive streak. After a morning of sledding down the hill, we have tired PaPa out because he has been dragging us back up the hill after each turn. We head into the house and are immediately welcomed with a sweet nutmeg smell; a pie is baking in the oven. In an earlier conversation, I had off-handedly mentioned that I would like to try a custard pie thinking that it would be similar to the Andy’s frozen custard I had tried once many years before. Granny, in her endlessly kind endeavors, has been working on a custard pie, just for me. My sisters and I watch her take the pie from the oven, and huddle anxiously around her with plates in hand. Carefully, she cuts the pie and doles out a piece for each of us. I take a bite. My mouth freezes its chewing. The pie tastes of sweetened egg.
I loathe eggs.
